How Lexus carved out its niche in the premium segment

Demand for premium cars has always been high. Because of this, well-known manufacturers have been trying to occupy this niche and gather a broad customer base for many years. Those who have achieved their goals have turned the premium segment into a closed club to which only the chosen ones have access. This continued until Lexus appeared on the horizon. Despite its youth, it quickly broke into the elite and occupied its niche there. Let’s figure out how the Japanese manufacturer managed to do this because they initially did not have much chance.

    Brief history of Lexus

The history of Lexus began in 1989. At that time, the brand’s first models were presented at the Detroit Auto Show. They were the LS 400 and ES 250, which immediately surprised everyone and earned several status awards. The LS 400 turned out to be wildly successful. Its high build quality, beautiful appearance, tranquil ride and relatively low cost distinguished it. Against the background of this masterpiece, premium models of Mercedes, BMW and other manufacturers seemed less attractive and exciting. Thanks to the vast success of its initial efforts in 1990, Lexus caught up with most brands in the premium segment in terms of sales. In the same year, new models SC300 and ES330 appeared.

Just two years after its inception, Lexus became the sales leader among foreign brands in the USA. Before the end of the century, Japanese manufacturers presented models such as the GS300, LX450, and RX300, as well as an updated version of the LS400. All of them were successful and popular with buyers, so by the end of 1999, Lexus reported selling its millionth car in the United States.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the Japanese manufacturer introduced several updated versions of its most popular models. The IS300 and SC430 also appeared on the car market. The latter became so popular that even today, it is used with pleasure in many countries around the world. Most often, it is bought at online auctions, where wrecked Lexus SC430 are sold. This option makes it possible to become the owner of a luxury car for relatively little money.

In 2005, Lexus separated from Toyota and became a completely independent brand. At the same time, the company entered the Asian market, paying particular attention to China and Japan. To conquer Asians, Lexus significantly expanded its model range, introducing cars that meet the needs and preferences of potential customers. Most of them sold well but failed to achieve the same outstanding success as the USA. Then, Lexus began selling cars in Africa and South America and relaunched its campaign in Europe.

In 2008, the economic crisis hit Lexus’ ambitions hard. Sales on all continents fell significantly, which made the release of new models unprofitable. To save the situation, the Japanese company switched to hybrid cars. In 2009, it released the HS250h sedan and RX450h SUV, which, contrary to many analysts’ forecasts, became popular in the USA and Japan. Between 2010 and 2020, Lexus returned to its previous sales figures. The following versions of the brand’s top models and several interesting new products were released during this time. Today, the company continues to improve and firmly holds its occupied niche in the premium segment.

Reasons for the popularity of Lexus

Lexus cars quickly became famous not only in the USA, for which they were initially produced but also beyond its borders. This became possible for four main reasons. The first of them is the highest possible quality. It is manifested in everything, from components to various little things, such as the processing of the seams of the seat upholstery. The reason for the popularity of the Lexus is the luxurious design of all cars. When developing it, the company’s designers consider every little thing, which is why even the most fastidious customers do not have unnecessary questions. The appearance of most Lexus cars immediately distinguishes them from the crowd, which is also a big plus for their creators.

The third reason for the popularity of Lexus models is called innovation. All company cars are equipped with the latest developments in the field of navigation, infotainment systems, and control and safety systems. Thanks to this approach, the company’s customers know that when buying a new car, they get the best today. The last reason why Lexus is loved all over the world is the high level of comfort. This is achieved through various advanced devices in the cabin that allow you to control temperature and humidity, achieve maximum air purity, etc. In addition, all Lexus models are equipped with modern seats, premium acoustic systems and much more.

Why did Lexus start to be considered a premium segment?

Since its inception in 1989, Lexus has declared its intention to become a significant player in the premium car market. It did not hide its ambitions and did everything to earn the recognition of its customers. This whole process began with the presentation of the new brand’s name. Toyota representatives spent a long time choosing a suitable option and eventually settled on Lexus. This name immediately began to be associated with the word “luxury” for many, which helped the new company take the first serious step to the top. Then, everyone interested in premium cars began to think about deciphering the name Lexus because the brand owners never gave an exact explanation. This further increased interest in the company and its products.

Even before the start of car sales, Lexus representatives created an excellent reputation for their company among representatives of the target audience. This was achieved due to the correct strategic positioning of the brand. At each event, the company’s managers always emphasized that their products combine unrivaled quality, unique design, advanced technology, luxury and comfort. All this helped to create the image of a luxury brand, the cars of which should be in the garages of various VIPs. In addition, this approach allowed the words “luxury” and “innovation” to become synonymous with the Lexus name forever.

It is much easier to climb to the top than to stay there. This popular rule has been well learned at Lexus, so throughout the entire period of the brand’s existence, they have tried to maintain their reputation at a high level and offer customers what they expect from premium cars. In this regard, the manufacturer regularly introduces various innovations, pays attention to all models’ exterior and interior design, and adapts its products to modern automotive trends. This approach allows Lexus to maintain and strengthen its position in the premium segment.

Lexus is a truly unique brand. It is one of the few that has managed to occupy its niche in the premium segment and gradually expand its influence on the entire automotive industry of our planet. The company has achieved such results due to the right approach to business and a detailed study of this process’s nuances. Having burst into the elite, Lexus quickly put down roots and became a part of the premium segment forever.
