    High-speed pursuit ends in arrest

Chase reached speeds of up to 115 mph

    – The Morro Bay Police Department arrested Gil Sung Kim, 43, of Morro Bay, following a high-speed pursuit on Tuesday.

At 4:29 p.m., city/county police dispatch alerted Morro Bay Police about a male subject punching a vehicle window in the Taco Bell parking lot. Officers received a vehicle description from the reporting party.

Approximately four minutes later, an officer located the described vehicle in the 1100 block of Kennedy Drive and attempted a traffic stop. Kim, the vehicle’s occupant, failed to comply with the officer’s lights and sirens, leading to a high-speed chase. The pursuit began on Harbor Boulevard and Morro Bay Boulevard before Kim headed south on Highway 1. He briefly stopped but ignored commands to exit his vehicle and continued south at speeds up to 115 mph. Officers terminated the pursuit due to safety concerns for the public.

Kim later redirected northbound on Highway 1 toward Morro Bay. During another attempt to stop him on Quintana Road, Kim fled again, reaching speeds up to 50 mph. Officers once more ended the chase for safety reasons. Kim then entered southbound Highway 1 toward San Luis Obispo.

With the assistance of the California Highway Patrol helicopter, the vehicle was tracked to Farrier Court in San Luis Obispo, where it came to a stop. San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s deputies arrested Kim, who was then transferred to the Morro Bay Police Department and booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail.

Kim faces charges of felony reckless driving while evading police, felony criminal threats, and a parole violation.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Morro Bay Police Department at (805) 772-6225 or San Luis Obispo County Crime Stoppers at (805) 549-STOP.
