Warriors’ dominant performance secures win over Bearcats
– The Paso Robles High School Bearcats football team fell to the Righetti Warriors, suffering a tough 51-13 defeat on Friday night on the road in Santa Maria. The Warriors remain undefeated with their fourth consecutive win of the season.
Just like last week, the Bearcats had a strong start. They quickly scored six points on their first possession of the game, gaining ground and dominating down low in defensive territory.
Getting inside of the red zone, junior quarterback Marcus Garcia completed a nine-yard pass to senior wide receiver Wyatt Johnson to put the Bearcats up early in the quarter. With no extra point, the Bearcats were up 6-0 to start the game.
The Warriors wasted no time, swiftly capitalizing on their possession. After gaining ground with two consecutive first downs, Righetti struck back with a 53-yard pass, followed by a 20-yard run to complete a 73-yard touchdown to score 7-6.
It didn’t stop there for the Warriors. On a Bearcats’ punt attempt, the kick fell short, landing at the Bearcats’ 30-yard line. Seizing the opportunity, the Warriors wasted no time and capitalized on the favorable field position, marching down the short distance to score another quick touchdown, further extending their lead 14-6.
The Warriors continued their momentum and punched in another touchdown just shortly after.
The Bearcats didn’t back down, showing signs of life on the offensive end, as senior running back Brandon England broke free for a 29-yard run to their 45-yard line. After a fake handoff, they moved the ball deeper into the Warriors’ territory. Junior wide receiver Tre Clark made a diving seven-yard catch, and the Bearcats picked up 17 more yards to get inside the red zone.
However, quarterback Garcia held onto the ball too long, resulting in a costly sack. The half ended with the Warriors leading 21-6, with field position playing a crucial role in the Warrior’s control of the game.
In hopes for a stronger second half, the Bearcats faced a major setback just minutes into the third quarter. Due to a holding penalty on the Bearcats, they were set back to their five-yard line, and on the next play, Garcia was sacked in the end zone, resulting in a safety and adding two extra points to the Warrior’s score, making it 23-6.
With total offensive control at every opportunity, the Warriors found their way to the red zone and powered through to the end zone once again, adding to the scoreboard 30-6.
The Bearcats tried to mount a comeback, as Clark had a 23-yard kickoff return and England added a 10-yard rushing first down. However, the Warriors responded with a 36-yard rush followed by a 9-yard touchdown pass, pushing their lead to 37-6 to end the third quarter.
On a Bearcats offensive possession deep in their own territory early in the fourth quarter, Garcia fumbled the ball, which was scooped away by the Warriors’ defense and taken to their end zone. This extended a 44-0 run and marked the score 44-6.
The Warriors added one more touchdown to make the score 51-6.
Late in the game, England scored a touchdown for the Bearcats, with the PAT good, cutting the deficit to 51-13. Despite the late effort, the Bearcats fell to the Warriors in a one-sided affair.
Constant mistakes from the Bearcats’ offense worked to the Warriors’ advantage, as they capitalized on turnovers and effectively turned them into scoring opportunities.
Now 1-3, the Bearcats look to turn their season around and secure a much-needed victory as they face their rivals, the Atascadero Greyhounds, on Friday, Sept. 20, in Atascadero at 7 p.m.
