Cadets volunteer 275 hours for Habitat SLO in Paso Robles

Estimated value of the cadets’ volunteer work is nearly $10,000

– Cadets from the Grizzly Youth Academy volunteered 275 hours for Habitat for Humanity San Luis Obispo County on Sunday. The 47 cadets and three cadre members contributed by clearing hillside weeds, digging holes for native trees, and organizing the site at the Habitat Vine Street Homes Project.

The estimated value of the cadets’ volunteer work is nearly $10,000. Nine families are set to move into these homes later this year, with each person on the mortgage required to contribute 250 hours of sweat equity toward their home. Volunteer support helps reduce labor costs and ease the workload on the families.

“Volunteers are a critical piece of the Habitat for Humanity puzzle. The cadets worked incredibly hard on Sunday. Smiles and laughter all around while working in the heat and contributing physically demanding labor,” said Colleen Stefanek, marketing and volunteer coordinator for Habitat SLO. “These young men were proud of their work. I hope they will drive by this community and know that they were an integral part of this project.”

Lunch for the volunteers was sponsored by North County Restaurant Group. The cadets, homeowners, and staff were served sandwiches and salads from Guesthouse Grill in Atascadero. Kyler Warren, director of community relations for North County Restaurant Group, said, “We want to be as involved as possible. The owners of NCRG are long-time locals, and we care about giving back, supporting, and providing for the community that raised us and will shape the future. Providing lunch for such a good group was amazing and we were happy to help.”
