    – California voters have until 8 p.m. today to make their voices heard in the 2024 general election. The San Luis Obispo County elections office says it is prepared for the influx of ballots and has already begun counting them. According to a report by the San Luis Obispo Tribune, approximately 183,000 individuals are registered to vote in the county.

As of Thursday afternoon, about 75,000 ballots—representing roughly 41% of registered voters—had already been scanned. The election office anticipates strong participation as the deadline approaches, according to the Tribune report.

Vote centers will remain open until 8 p.m. today, allowing voters to cast their ballots in person or drop off mail-in ballots at designated locations. Mailed ballots must be postmarked by today and received by the county elections office within seven days, by Nov. 12.

Election results will begin to be released at 8 p.m. today, but these results will not be certified until Dec. 3. The county’s elections office is required to report ballot returns from polling places every two hours on election night. The initial results will include votes cast in person on Election Day and mail-in ballots received by 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2.

If voters drop off their mail-in ballots at polling places on Election Day, those ballots will be counted later and will not be included in the immediate results.

The county has until Dec. 3 to submit presidential election results to the California Secretary of State’s Office.
