City invites local students to enter Martin Luther King Jr. art contest

The theme for this year’s contest, ‘Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy’

    – The City of Paso Robles is inviting local students in grades 7 through 12 to enter its Martin Luther King Jr. 2025 Art Contest. The contest celebrates Dr. King’s legacy of equality and justice and will culminate in a public recognition ceremony at Paso Robles Downtown City Park. Students who live or attend school in Paso Robles can submit their entries until 5 p.m. on Dec. 4 at Paso Robles Centennial Park, located at 600 Nickerson Drive.

The theme for this year’s contest, “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy,” encourages young artists to reflect on Dr. King’s values and explore how individuals and communities can continue to uphold these principles. Students may use mixed media, including watercolor, pastels, and sketches, with artwork limited to a maximum size of 16 inches by 20 inches. Each entry must include a brief description of 25 to 100 words explaining the piece’s connection to the theme.

“This contest provides a positive and meaningful opportunity for all Paso Robles middle and high school students to share their creative talents while reflecting on Dr. King’s message of justice, freedom, and democracy,” said Lovella Walker, an organizer of the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. “We’re thrilled to see students’ interpretations of this year’s theme, ‘Mission Possible,’ as they consider how to protect these important ideals in our society.”

Winning entries will be recognized at Paso Robles’ Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at city park on Jan. 20, 2025. Junior high winners will have their artwork printed on commemorative T-shirts, while high school winners in the best-of-show category will receive cash prizes: $100 for first place, $50 for second, and $25 for third. Selected entries will also be featured on the city’s social media platforms and displayed at the Paso Robles History Museum and City Library during Black History Month.
