City shares tips for safe leaf litter disposal
Fallen leaves, if left on the streets, can create several problems
– City of Paso Robles officials and environmental advocates are encouraging residents to help keep streets clear of leaf litter this fall. They are asking residents to remove leaves from yards, sidewalks, and streets to prevent issues with flooding, water quality, and road safety.
City officials advise that fallen leaves, if left on the streets, can create several problems. Blocked storm drains from leaves can cause water buildup and lead to flooding. Additionally, decomposing leaves in the streets can pollute local waterways, which could lead to algae blooms and lower water quality in nearby rivers and streams. Leaves on streets can also create slippery surfaces, increasing the risk of accidents for drivers and pedestrians.
City officials add that clearing streets of leaves also supports the local ecosystem, as properly disposed leaves can break down and enrich the soil, benefiting plants and animals.
Residents are encouraged to follow three key methods to manage leaf litter:
- Rake and Bag: Residents can collect leaves from their yards and place them in bags or compost bins, rather than leaving them in the street.
- Utilize Yard Waste Pickup: Paso Robles provides local yard waste collection services, and residents are encouraged to take advantage of this option.
- Compost at Home: Residents can also consider composting leaves and other yard waste at home to both enrich garden soil and help keep streets clear.
