Georgia Brown students return to science camp after decade hiatus
Fifth graders explore tide pools at Camp KEEP By the Sea
– Georgia Brown Elementary School’s fifth-grade students will soon attend science camp at Camp KEEP By the Sea, marking the program’s return after a nearly 10-year hiatus. The immersive four-day camp will offer students opportunities to explore tide pools, observe wildlife, and engage in activities aligned with California’s Next Generation Science Standards.
The Parent-Teacher Organization at Georgia Brown has committed to making the camp accessible for all students, regardless of financial circumstances.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, only one in four California fourth and eighth graders are proficient in science. Programs like Camp KEEP aim to address this gap by providing hands-on science education, fostering critical thinking, and preparing students for future careers requiring skills in science, technology, engineering, and math.
“We are so proud to bring this program back to our school and grateful to our community for making it possible,” said Parent-Teacher Organization President Courtney Perales. “Every student deserves the chance to learn and grow through experiences like this.”
Board members of the parent organization shared the news with all three fifth-grade classrooms on Friday morning to build enthusiasm among the students.
To support the program, the organization launched a fundraiser encouraging students to seek contributions from family, friends, and neighbors. Contributors will have a chance to win a YETI cooler filled with local gift cards and merchandise. The campaign is designed to engage students in the fundraising process while offering the community an incentive to participate.
The organization is also seeking additional support from local businesses, organizations, and individuals to ensure every student can attend. Those interested in contributing can contact Perales at georgiabrownpto@gmail.com.
