Basketball: Bearcats crush Grizzlies with full-court press, sharp offense
Paso Robles dominates San Luis Obispo Classical in 106-28 blowout
– The Paso Robles High School Basketball Team tipped off their season on Thursday night with a dominant performance, overwhelming San Luis Obispo Classical Academy in a lopsided 106-28 victory over the Grizzlies.
The Bearcats stormed out to a 12-0 lead against the Grizzlies, capitalizing on their ability to create opportunities for senior center Logan Van Pelt. The team excelled at finding Van Pelt in the paint, setting him up for strong finishes at the rim.
Van Pelt scored six points in the first two minutes of the opening quarter. The Grizzlies struggled to contain the 6-foot-1-inch center inside, allowing the Bearcats to exploit his size advantage effectively.
The Bearcat’s defense set up in a full-court press early in the game, applying significant pressure on the Grizzlies’ offense and disrupting their rhythm from getting past half-court as their double teams forced the Grizzlies to turn the ball over countless times.
Senior guard Omaree Daniloff played a dominant role in the season opener. He led the Bearcats in points, recording 18. His ability to successfully take the ball to the rack and finish was something the Grizzlies had a hard time stopping.
Following Daniloff was senior guard Adane Siegrist, who ended the night with 13 points. Siegrist created opportunities on both ends of the court, from transition plays to drawing the foul in the paint.
Turnovers plagued the Grizzlies in the first half, trailing 62-17 at halftime.
Coming into the second half of the game, the Grizzlies were short one player, leaving them to rely strictly on four players. Already down 45 points, the Grizzlies’ fate was already sealed, but the significant deficit did not deter their focus on continuing to play hard.
“Seeing they were down a player, we wanted to show respect for the game and our opponent,” head coach Chris Lopez said. “We decided to drop out of our press and rotate our players, but still wanting to have enough respect to continue to play hard.”
The significant deficit allowed more Bearcat players to be rotated into the game. Younger players and some bench players got the opportunity to showcase their capabilities, taking advantage of the favorable matchup. This allowed coach Lopez to evaluate the player’s performance and potential in a live game setting as they move forward and make adjustments later in the season.
“It’s big for me to see if they remember more or less how we are going to operate moving forward and building trust and confidence in them,” Lopez said.
The Bearcats dominated in their season opener and aim to continue this momentum throughout the season. They will enjoy a brief break before returning to action on Dec. 2, when they host Madera South at 6:30 p.m. in Gil Asa Gymnasium.
