Filmmaker John Powers will present Bikini Atoll documentary
– The Estrella Warbirds Museum will host its December dinner on Wednesday, Dec. 4, featuring a presentation by writer and director John Powers about his documentary Atomic Shot. The 45-minute film recounts the work of the Army Air Force Air Photo Unit during the atomic tests at Bikini Atoll in July 1946.
The presentation will explore the imagery captured by the unit, which documented the detonations of the fourth and fifth atomic devices. Powers discovered previously unseen documentation related to the unit through materials belonging to his former father-in-law, Col. Richard Joseph Cunningham, who commanded the group.
Powers is a graduate of the University of Southern California with degrees in drama. His career spans screenwriting, theater production, filmmaking, and teaching. He has also published fiction and non-fiction works. He resides in San Pedro, Calif., with his wife, DeBorah Green.
The catered dinner requires reservations, which must be made by 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 2, to ensure accurate attendance numbers for the caterer. The cost of the prime rib dinner is $30 per person. Reservations can be made online or by calling (805) 296-1935.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with a no-host bar, and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.
The Estrella Warbirds Museum is located at 4251 Dry Creek Road, in Paso Robles.
