Southbound Highway 101 lane closure starts today in Gaviota
Northbound and southbound Gaviota Rest Areas will remain open during the lane closure
– A one-mile segment of southbound U.S. Highway 101 between the Highway 1 interchange and the Gaviota Rest Area will be reduced to one lane beginning Thursday, Jan. 9.
The closure of the right southbound lane will allow Caltrans to complete bridge improvements, guardrail upgrades, and slope and drainage repairs. This lane reduction is expected to remain in place until spring 2025.
The northbound and southbound Gaviota Rest Areas will remain open during the lane closure. However, planned overnight closures of the rest areas will occur to complete additional work. The closure schedule will be announced once confirmed.
The construction is part of a $50 million project to grind and pave approximately six miles of U.S. Highway 101. Additional improvements include shoulder reconstruction, high friction surface treatment, new guardrails, and median concrete barriers in the Gaviota and Nojoqui areas.
CalPortland Construction of Santa Maria is the contractor for the project, which is expected to be completed by summer 2025.
