City streamlines accessory dwelling unit construction with new program
Homeowners can save time with city’s new pre-approved accessory dwelling plans
– The City of Paso Robles has launched a program offering pre-approved plans to help property owners streamline the construction of accessory dwelling units (ADUs). The initiative aims to reduce the time, cost, and complexity of adding ADUs to residential properties, supporting the city’s goals of increasing housing options and encouraging sustainable growth.
The program provides professionally designed plans that comply with state and local building codes. Homeowners using these plans can shorten the plan-check process, save on architectural and engineering fees, and simplify construction by selecting from a variety of pre-approved floor plans. The available designs range from studio layouts to four-bedroom residences.
ADUs are independent residential units located on the same property as a primary dwelling. They can increase housing supply and provide homeowners with flexible options such as housing family members, creating rental income, or adding living space. ADUs cannot be used as short-term rentals but may be used as long-term rental units.
To address the housing shortage in California, the City of Paso Robles has taken steps to make ADU construction more accessible. These measures include reducing fees, easing parking requirements, and streamlining approval processes.
Property owners interested in the program can begin by visiting the city’s website at prcity.com/ADU to review available plans. After selecting a plan, applicants should consult the preapproved ADU checklist for additional required documentation. Completed applications and supporting documents can be submitted online at www.PasoPermits.com.
“Offering pre-approved ADU plans is part of our commitment to increasing housing options and simplifying processes for our residents,” said Devon Kuhnle, deputy building official. “This program provides a practical and affordable solution for homeowners looking to create additional living spaces or generate rental income.”
