San Luis Obispo Police Department releases statement
– A San Luis Obispo police officer was stopped by Transportation Security Administration personnel Monday at San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport after a firearm was mistakenly placed in their carry-on bag instead of checked luggage, according to the San Luis Obispo Police Department.
The officer was traveling on duty for an investigation when the firearm was detected during security screening. Federal law allows law enforcement officers to carry firearms in checked luggage or on their person if necessary, provided administrative forms are completed in advance.
TSA personnel retrieved the firearm and interviewed the officer, who identified themselves as an on-duty employee of the San Luis Obispo Police Department. After the interview, the officer was allowed to continue to their destination.
The police department stated it will conduct an internal review of the incident.
“We regret the disruption and would like to thank our law enforcement partners at TSA for keeping our community and travelers safe here in San Luis Obispo,” the department said in a statement.
