Morro Bay man arrested after drawing bayonet at city meeting

The Morro Bay City Council meets at the Veterans’ Memorial Building, located at 209 Surf Street, Morro Bay, CA 93442.

Kiernan Cottle, 28, regularly speaks at city council meetings

    – A Morro Bay man was arrested after drawing a 20-inch World War II bayonet during public comment at the Morro Bay City Council meeting on Jan. 28, according to a report by the San Luis Obispo Tribune.

Police identified the man as Kiernan Cottle, 28, who regularly speaks at city council meetings. During his comments, he unsheathed the bayonet, held it above his head, then wrapped it in a towel and sat down.

Morro Bay police initially told Cottle to take the weapon home but later interviewed city officials and investigated the incident. On Jan. 30, police arrested him for violating California Penal Code 171B(a3), which prohibits carrying a knife longer than 4 inches in a public building or meeting.

Cottle was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on $25,000 bail.
