Bearcats women’s basketball team battles back, but falls short to Santa Ynez

Bearcats battle back, but fall short to Santa Ynez in Senior Night loss

Paso Robles High School women’s basketball honored their lone senior, Caitlyn Tweten, on Friday night at Gil Asa Gymnasium during their Senior Night matchup against Santa Ynez.

The Bearcats battled until the final moments but came up short in a 56-48 loss, with the game going down to the wire. Despite the outcome, the night was special for Tweten, who took the court at Gil Asa Gymnasium for the last time as a Bearcat, surrounded by teammates, coaches, and supporters celebrating her impact on the program.

“Caitlyn has positively impacted the team,” Head Coach Mark Martinez said. “She is always smiling and giggling. She’s a good kid, and I was glad she got a lot of minutes tonight.”

Bearcats’ offensive growth on display in senior night battle

All season, the Bearcats have found themselves playing catch-up as they’ve fallen behind within minutes of the game. Friday night was different. Though Santa Ynez opened the game with a 6-0 run, Paso Robles responded immediately, surging ahead with a 10-0 scoring run of their own to take control early. “Transitions allowed us to take control,” Martinez said. “We got out on transition and got some early buckets.” The Bearcats’ strong transition game set the tone early, allowing them to push the pace and control momentum against the Pirates.

Their offensive growth throughout the season has been made evident, but their improved chemistry and ball movement were especially on display Friday night. With more cohesive passing and smart decision-making, the Bearcats effectively broke through Santa Ynez’s press, creating open looks and capitalizing on fast-break opportunities.

Defensive pressure and breaking the press has been a season-long challenge for the Bearcats, but they looked more composed and in control on Friday night. Instead of getting trapped or rushed into turnovers, they moved the ball efficiently, using quick passes and smart spacing to navigate Santa Ynez’s pressure.

“They are doing much better at finding where they need to be and buying into what they need to be doing,” Martinez said.

Junior guard Kate Harrington led the Bearcat offense with 14 points.

With the Bearcats successfully breaking the press and bringing the ball down the court with ease, their improved ball movement created opportunities in the paint. This opened the post for freshman Macoy Sill, who took advantage of the spacing to establish position and finish at the rim. Sill recorded a total of eight points.

Only a freshman, Sill has already made her presence felt on the court, showcasing skill and composure beyond her years. With plenty of time to develop, she has the potential to become a dominant force for the Bearcats in the years ahead. As she continues to refine her game and gain experience, Sill is poised to be a key player in the program’s future.

Bearcats plagued by Pirates’ three-point shooting

Still emphasizing more discipline on defense, the Bearcats found themselves plagued by three-point shooting from the Pirates. “[Santa Ynez] just made shots when they had to,” Martinez said. “A couple of bad defensive shots left some shooters open, and they hit them. They did what they were supposed to do.”

While the score was within reach throughout the game, shots from behind the arc gave the Pirates an advantage and sealed the Bearcats’ fate, as they could not contest the shots.

“We were leaving the shooters alone,” Martinez said. “We were helping off of the shooter when there was no reason to be helping, leaving [the Pirates] wide open.”

    Final league game

The Bearcats have one final game remaining in league play before postseason contention arrives. The Bearcats’ final game will be on the road against Cabrillo High School on Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
