– Paso Robles High School softball season is just around the corner, wrapping up two scrimmages this past week to showcase what the team is made of.
On Friday night, the Bearcats faced Arroyo Grande in a scrimmage that highlighted key areas for improvement. The Bearcats battled but ultimately fell 14-1. Although it was only a scrimmage, the Bearcats are now focused on cleaning up mistakes from Friday’s scrimmage before their season opener against Santa Ynez on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
Seniors Ashlynn Domingos and Kylee Nancolas are leading this Bearcat squad, aiming to be strong role models on the field for their young core. Their leadership will be key as the team looks to grow and improve throughout the season.
“I’m really excited to see our growth and progress as a team,” Nancolas said. “All I see is a lot of effort, good attitudes and willingness to grow.”
The Bearcat squad looks much different this season with a new lineup, five freshmen, and a new head coach. As a result, the biggest emphasis during offseason training has been on building strong communication to help the team play cohesive ball on the field.
Building chemistry and ensuring everyone is on the same page will be crucial as the team prepares for the season.
The Bearcats are led under first-year Head Coach Andrew MacDonald, who formerly came from coaching at Mission Prep High School.
As a senior, Domingos reflected on the biggest challenge throughout her high school career—constantly adapting to new coaching staff each season.
With a new coach each season, the team has faced challenges adapting to different coaching styles and expectations.
“But ultimately, when Andy and Robby came out here, they definitely improved the game for Kylee and me,” Domingos said.
Macdonald and assistant coach Robby Dawson started Domingos and Nancolas’ travel ball careers at a young age, helping shape their foundation in the sport. Their long-standing connection has made the transition smoother this season, bringing the team a sense of familiarity and trust.
“They were the coaches who started our travel ball career, and I think it’s special for them to be out here and finish [our softball careers],” Domingos said.
With league play not starting until March 18, the preseason offers the Bearcats a valuable opportunity to sharpen their skills and build momentum before conference competition begins.
The Bearcats will be on the road for their season opener next Wednesday against Santa Ynez at 3:30 p.m.
