Victory Garden workshop series to be held at Centennial Park
Workshops will guide beginners in starting vegetable gardens in backyards, pots on balconies, or community gardens
– The UC Master Gardeners of San Luis Obispo County will offer a series of four food-growing workshops at Centennial Park in Paso Robles. The Victory Garden series will take place on Saturdays, March 8, 15, 22, and 29, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Live Oak Room at 600 Nickerson Drive.
Registration costs $55 per person for the full series or $85 per couple. A single session is available for $15 per person if space allows, with preference given to those registering for all four sessions. Fees cover materials and supplies used during the workshops. Participants can register at https://ucanr.edu/vgpaso25.
The workshops will guide beginners in starting vegetable gardens in backyards, pots on balconies, or community gardens. Classes will include hands-on activities, demonstrations, and group discussions. Topics will cover getting started, selecting plants, irrigation, pest management, garden safety, tool care, and fruit tree selection and maintenance. Those who complete all four classes will receive a UC-certified Victory Gardener certificate.
Participants will also have guided access to the Centennial Park Demonstration Garden, a project developed in partnership with the city of Paso Robles and the University of California Regents. The garden includes eight plots featuring trees, grapes and berries, lawn alternatives, a kitchen garden, pollinator-friendly landscaping, a seasonal bulb garden, composting, California native plants, and a fire safety plot. Each plot serves as a model for low-water gardening.
“These Victory Garden workshop series offers a special opportunity for home gardeners to gain deeper knowledge about water-wise food growing,” said Maria Murrietta, program coordinator for the UC Master Gardener Program of San Luis Obispo County.
