    Obituary of Greg McMillan

    Greg McMillan.

    Greg McMillan
    March 25, 1946 – Feb. 21, 2025
    Shandon, California

    – “There are some who can live without wild things and some who cannot” – Aldo Leopold, Sand County Almanac.

Greg, an adventurous spirit and creative force, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship and exploration. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Linda Powell-McMillan, daughter, Amber Ying, and two grandchildren, Joe and Rebecca Ying.

He lived his life on his own terms. He grew up in a family that brought environmental scientists and other learned elders into a home where discussions of the wonders and complexities of the natural world were part of the conversations around meals and the fireplace. He took that knowledge and respect for deep ecology and applied it to his life.

A builder at heart, Greg specialized in designing and constructing straw buildings, combining innovation with sustainability. His passion for the natural world extended beyond architecture – he was a dedicated wildlife photographer, an excellent travel agent and tour guide, and a world traveler who sought out the beauty of untouched landscapes.

He found joy in birdwatching, flyfishing, and hunting – immersing himself in wild places around the world. He was an independent thinker and an individualist. Always pushing boundaries with his imagination. His biggest love, besides Linda, was his friends. He had friends from many circles of life all over the world.

A true lover of grasslands and wide-open spaces, Greg saw the world through a unique lens, embracing life with curiosity and purpose. He hand-built two homes on the ranch his father purchased in the 1940s in the grasslands of Cholame CA. His legacy will remain in the stories and projects he created.
