Update: CHP officers involved in collision that occurred on southbound 101 Sunday
Update posted April 15:
– The Templeton office of the California Highway Patrol released additional details about the collision that occurred on Highway 101 near the Wellsona Road intersection on Sunday night:
A two-officer unit from the Templeton area of the California Highway Patrol sustained suspected minor injuries in a collision involving a suspected impaired driver on April 13 at approximately 10:49 p.m.
The officers were traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 101 in the number one lane at about 65 mph in a marked black-and-white Chevrolet Tahoe. As they approached the area north of Wellsona Road, a 36-year-old Paso Robles man, driving a 2008 Ford Focus, entered the highway from eastbound Wellsona Road for unknown reasons and drove into the path of the patrol vehicle.
The officers attempted to brake but were unable to avoid a collision with the driver’s side of the Ford.
Both officers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and sustained suspected minor injuries. The driver of the Ford, who was not wearing a seatbelt, also sustained suspected minor injuries.
After receiving medical evaluation at a hospital, the driver was booked into the San Luis Obispo County jail on a felony charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Major collision reported on southbound 101 near Wellsona Road
– A major collision occurred late Sunday night/early Monday morning on southbound U.S. 101 at Wellsona Road, north of Paso Robles, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Authorities diverted vehicles around the crash site while crews responded. A later update confirmed that the roadway had been cleared.
No additional details have been released at the time of this report.
