Firestone Walker releases Sunglider lager for Earth Day

Brewery has recently implemented several upgrades to reduce its environmental impact

Firestone Walker Brewing Company announced new sustainability milestones and introduced a new beer called Sunglider in celebration of Earth Day. The updates are part of the brewery’s Brewing for Tomorrow initiative, which focuses on environmental stewardship and sustainable brewing practices.

“Brewing for Tomorrow is about being good stewards of our natural resources,” said CEO Nick Firestone. “It’s a mindset that drives every decision we make. From solar and water to carbon and now sourcing local grains, we’re committed to crafting beer with a lighter footprint and a deeper connection to our home.”

The brewery has implemented several upgrades to reduce its environmental impact. A new carbon dioxide recovery system offsets more than 4.4 million pounds of emissions annually. On-site solar panels now provide over 60 percent of the brewery’s energy needs. A custom-built system recycles more than 500,000 gallons of water each year, and more than 20 million pounds of spent grain are repurposed as cattle feed for nearby ranches.

In conjunction with these efforts, Firestone Walker released Sunglider, a limited-edition Helles-style lager brewed with Atlas barley grown in Paso Robles by local farmer Bob Work. The heritage grain, originally from Morocco, has been adapted to California’s Mediterranean climate and supports regenerative agriculture.

“Sunglider is brewed for warm days, golden hours, and anyone who cares where their beer comes from,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “It’s a beautiful lager with a story that starts in the fields of Paso Robles and ends in your glass.”

Sunglider is now available on draft at all Firestone Walker locations. Four-packs of 16-ounce cans will be available in May.
