    Obituary of Pearl Munak, 83

In loving memory of Pearl Munak
    Aug. 12, 1941 – April 4, 2025

    – Pearl Munak, beloved member of the Paso Robles community and longtime member of Plymouth Congregational Church, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, creativity, and unwavering dedication to justice.

Born on August 12, 1941, in Houston, Texas, Pearl led a life marked by intellect and heart. She earned her BA from the University of Texas at Austin and later a JD from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. Her early career included roles as a social worker, union organizer, and attorney—each one a testament to her deep commitment to the well-being of others.

Eventually, Pearl chose a quieter, more contemplative path, partnering with her late husband, Edwin Joseph Munak, in farming the land they loved in Paso Robles. Together, they grew heirloom tomatoes, melons, and a variety of produce, supplying California’s top restaurants, markets, and distributors. Munak Ranch became a labor of love and a symbol of their shared devotion to organic, sustainable, local agriculture.

Pearl was a published poet with a gift for finding beauty in everyday life. Her writing reflected the same spirit that guided her actions: joyful, thoughtful, and deeply rooted in care for the world around her.

Perhaps dearest to Pearl’s heart was her tireless advocacy for social justice. A faithful member of the Democratic Club in Paso Robles and a driving force behind Transitional Food and Shelter, she worked to ensure unhoused individuals received support and dignity, particularly after hospitalization. At Plymouth Congregational Church, where she had been a member since the 1980s, Pearl served for many years on the Mission- Outreach Board, faithfully keeping her church family informed and engaged in service to the vulnerable.

Those who knew Pearl speak of her as humble, selfless, and tirelessly compassionate. Her chosen family- farm managers Hugo and Victor Gomez and their families—along with her cousins Tracy Gerke, Ruth Jasek, John Hunt, Mary Achord, and Dorothy McDade, will remember her as a steadfast, nurturing presence. So too will the many cats she lovingly rescued, cared for, and welcomed into her life.

A celebration of Pearl’s life will be held at Plymouth Congregational Church, 1301 Oak St., Paso Robles, CA, on Saturday, May 24 at 11 AM. A time of food, fellowship, and shared remembrances will follow. All who knew and loved her are welcome to attend.

Pearl’s spirit-bright, bold, and brimming with love-will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
