SLO Rideshare promotes biking with multiple events in May

SLO Rideshare kicks off bike month across SLO County

Community members can explore over fifty events

    – SLO Regional Rideshare, a division of the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG), will kick off Bike Month on May 1 and continue throughout the month with a series of events aimed at encouraging cycling across San Luis Obispo County. This year’s theme, Summer Camp: Nostalgia, encourages residents to enjoy twilight conversations and warm, sunny rides.

The official start to Bike Month will be the Bike Month Kick-Off Party at Bang the Drum Brewery in San Luis Obispo, scheduled for May 1. The event will feature a tie-dye and helmet decorating station, a photo booth, bike trivia with prizes, and a speech from San Luis Obispo Mayor Erica A. Stewart. This event is open to residents of all ages, and attendees will learn about various Bike Month activities planned for the month.

Additional events organized by SLO Regional Rideshare include the Bike in Movie @ The Hub on May 9 and Roll to the Ranch – Family Bike Fun on May 31. The community will also be able to participate in multiple weekday morning and afternoon bike breakfasts and happy hours, as well as group rides and family-oriented gatherings during evenings and weekends. These events are made possible by mini-grants distributed by Rideshare.

A comprehensive calendar of over fifty Bike Month events can be accessed on the Rideshare website, ensuring that there are opportunities for all community members to take part in the festivities.

School districts throughout the county are also involved in making Bike Month a success. On Bike to School Day (May 7), forty K-12 schools will host welcome events for students who walk, bike, or roll to school. Rideshare will provide snacks and school supplies for these participants. This event aims to highlight the Safe Routes to School program, promoting safe and healthy commuting.

Another highlight of Bike Month is Bike to Work Week (May 12-16). During this week and throughout the month, participants are encouraged to log their bike trips on iRideshare.org. Those who log trips will be eligible to win prizes, including a Mooncool E-Trike, which will be awarded to a senior or individual with disabilities. Eligible residents can nominate themselves for this prize.

Bike Month will conclude with a complimentary bike breakfast celebration hosted by SLO Rideshare and SLOCOG staff on May 29, offering residents and commuters the chance to meet with regional transportation planners and discuss their transportation needs.

For residents without a bike, the Bike Kitchen offers refurbished bicycles for sale, and Bike SLO County’s Try-A-Bike program provides e-bikes available for test rides for five days.

Additional sponsors for Bike Month include the SLO County Air Pollution Control District, the San Luis Obispo Bike Club, the Central Coast Clean Cities Coalition, and Bike SLO County.
