Field Day at Paso Robles airport tests emergency radio skills

Amateur Radio Field Day demonstrates science, skill, service

Event to be held at open field near Estrella Warbirds Museum

    – Local amateur radio operators will demonstrate their emergency communication skills during the annual American Radio Relay League Field Day from 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, to 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 2,9 at the Paso Robles Airport. The event will be held in the open field just west of the Estrella Warbirds Museum at 4251 Dry Creek Road in Paso Robles.

Field Day is the premier event for the amateur radio community and takes place nationwide on the last full weekend in June. Amateur radio enthusiasts, known as “hams,” across North America will participate in this 24-hour exercise to test equipment, refine emergency response techniques and highlight the role radio communications play during disasters.

The Paso Robles Amateur Radio Club will set up temporary stations to operate under simulated emergency conditions, using voice, digital and Morse code transmissions to connect with stations across the country and beyond.

“Amateur radio has long been a cornerstone of emergency preparedness, offering reliable communications when other systems fail,” said Scot Morrison, club member and Field Day organizer. “Field Day is a great way for the public to see firsthand how local radio operators are ready to serve their communities when it matters most.”

The public is invited to visit beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 28. Attendees can meet local operators, tour the setup and operate a radio under expert supervision.
