California Mid-State Fair brings back Special Stars exhibit

This year’s featured contest is a 3D jockey or horse sculpture

    – The California Mid-State Fair will once again feature the Myra Wilde Special Stars Department in its 2025 competitive exhibits program. The department offers individuals with emotional, developmental or physical challenges, including learning disabilities, an opportunity to participate in the fair.

The Special Stars Department is part of the fair’s larger competitive exhibits, which receive thousands of entries from across San Luis Obispo County. The department uses the Danish system for judging, meaning entries are evaluated on their own merit rather than against each other. There is no entry fee, and each exhibitor may submit up to two entries per class. Judges will award ribbons and premiums at their discretion, including Best of Show for junior and senior divisions.

“The California Mid-State Fair supports the belief that no physical or mental disability need limit the human potential to create,” said Colleen Bojorquez, CEO. “We’re proud to partner with Mechanics Bank to provide this empowering and creative platform.”

This year’s featured contest is a 3D jockey or horse sculpture. Participants may use any material, such as wood, wire, ceramics or recycled items, provided the structure can stand on its own. Flat art entries will not be accepted for this contest.

The sculpture contest includes two divisions: Junior (18 and under) and Senior (19 and older), listed as Division 598 and Division 599, respectively. Prizes include $500 for first place, $250 for second place, and $100 for third place.

Several other categories within the fair are still accepting entries. In the Agriculture and Horticulture department, classes include fresh herbs, vegetables, and fruits. The registration deadline is July 8, with entries accepted on Monday, July 14, from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

In the Floriculture department, classes include potted plants, color in a pot, floral arrangements, and cut flowers. The registration deadline is also July 8, and entries will be received during the same window on July 14.

Exhibitor disability or group affiliation will not be listed on entry tags. Entry guidelines specific to each department must be followed. Exhibitors who complete works unassisted may submit them in the open department competitions as well.

Entries may be picked up after the fair on Tuesday, July 29, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The 2025 California Mid-State Fair will take place July 17–28 in Paso Robles. The fair includes concerts, exhibits, competitions, carnival rides and food.
