Fire burns 1,300 acres near Shandon, crews contain spread

Cause remains under investigation
– A vegetation fire broke out on Saturday near Bitterwater Road and Bitterwater Valley Road in Shandon, burning in grassland and prompting a full wildland dispatch, according to the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department.
Initial aerial estimates reported the fire at approximately 25 acres.
Later updates from the department reported the fire had grown to 836 acres with 10 percent containment. Firefighters faced tough access and intense heat while working the lines.
Subsequent updates showed the fire increased to 1,300 acres and was 26 percent contained. Officials said forward progress had been stopped, though crews continued to operate in challenging conditions.
As of the latest update, issued seven hours ago, the Bitter Fire remains at 1,300 acres and is 90 percent contained. Firefighters are continuing mop-up operations and addressing hot spots in rugged terrain.
No cause has been reported.
