Grazing project reduces wildfire risk in Salinas Riverbed
Officials say grazing efforts helped stop two fires this season
– The City of Paso Robles has completed targeted grazing operations within the Salinas River corridor to reduce wildfire risk and improve fire resilience in the community.
The Goat Girls LLC grazed 84 acres along the east and west sides of the river within city limits, maintaining the primary firebreaks. An additional 7 acres were treated on the Fern Canyon firebreak, located west of the city.
As fire activity has increased this year in the Salinas River, officials reported that the fuel reduction efforts have already proven effective. This fire season, two fires started in untreated portions of the riverbed. In both cases, the fires burned into the grazed firebreaks, which allowed firefighters to quickly contain them before they could grow or escape the river corridor.
The city thanked The Goat Girls LLC for providing grazing services and the San Luis Obispo County Fire Safe Council for grant funding that supported the work. Paso Robles officials said they remain committed to wildfire prevention strategies to protect residents, property, and natural resources.
