– Milo Leon Emmack went Home to be with our Lord on June 20, 2025, just three days after his 84th birthday.
Born in Riverton, WY, Milo lived a life defined by deep faith, hard work, joyful movement, and enduring love for his family and community.
Milo was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Janice Ruth Emmack, his sister, Jerry Manka, and nephew Tom Manka. He is survived by his brother-in-law Larry Manka, nephew Danny Manka, former sister-in-law Susan, niece Heidi Meredith, nephews Kip & Mark Meredith, Sister-in-law Sandy Meredith, Sister-in-law Tina Meredith, nephews Joshua, Ezra and Joel Meredith, and finally by his children Bill and Staci Emmack, grandchildren Chance and Hannah Emmack, and great-grandson Radly Cunningham, each of whom he cherished deeply, and whom miss him terribly.
A proud veteran, Milo served honorably in the United States Air Force. After his service, he carried on a cherished family tradition as a third-generation Master Barber. With precise hands and a warm heart, he barbered for an astonishing 68 years, becoming a trusted presence and a friend to generations of clients.
Milo moved his family from Wyoming to San Luis Obispo in 1972, where they lived until moving to Atascadero in 1988, where he and Janice designed and built their home, with the help of The Cal Poly Construction Management Dept, where Janice was dept.secretary for 25 years. Milo opened his shop, The Barber Shop there in 1990, and was still cutting hair just months before cancer finally took him.
Milo was known throughout Atascadero for walking everywhere-his signature stride a familiar sight around town. Up to a week before he passed, he stayed active with yoga and Silver Sneakers classes, embracing life with energy and gratitude. His love of local “Music in the Park” events was legendary-he danced to every song, connected with everyone he met, and never missed an opportunity to share joy.
Faith was the cornerstone of Milo’s life. He was a founding member of Hope Lutheran Church and sang joyfully in the choir for over 35 years. He also faithfully attended Vintage Church, supporting both missions because of the friendships he cultivated in each. Milo’s devotion to Christ was unshakable-he endured life’s hardships with grace, never losing the kind smile on his face, the sparkle in his blue eyes, or his ability to uplift others, even in times of pain.
Milo was adored by all who knew him. His gentle spirit, humility, and unwavering kindness left a lasting imprint on countless lives.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Milo’s community-his brothers at The Elks and Masons, his friends at the Atascadero Senior Center, Silver Sneakers, his yoga class, and his beloved dance family at Sculpterra Winery. We will not forget the kindness of his wonderful and doctors, especially Dr. Cort Thompson, for being a steady voice in stormy seas. Thank you to the ibcredible staff at Urology associates and to Dr. Kevin Farr, who helped him feel valued and cherished.
Special thanks to fellow barbers, Larry Matthews and Felix Lopez, whose camaraderie Milo so deeply valued, and to his lifelong friends and relatives in Wyoming, whose support remained steadfast through the years.
A heartfelt thank-you is also extended to his incredible neighbors, whose kindness sustained him in his final months. Particular appreciation goes to Jim and Sandra Rodgers, Pastor Wendell, Nola Hines, Guy Snell, Mike and Denise, John and Monica, and the Schmidt Family-your compassion and friendship brought Milo peace and joy. He loved you all completely.
We know that Milo is now reunited with his beloved Janice, likely already dancing to the first of many heavenly songs. Until we see him again, we’ll hold tight to the memory of his laughter, his unwavering faith, and the love he so freely gave.
Remember, “It’ll feel better when it quits hurting”
