Conference has supported writers of all levels since 1984

    – The 41st annual Cuesta College Central Coast Writers’ Conference will return Sept. 26-27 with workshops, keynote speakers, breakout sessions, and a new teen program. The 2025 theme, “It’s Time,” reflects the event’s goal to inspire writers of all levels, from beginners to published authors.

The conference, supported by sponsors, is offering new scholarship opportunities and writing contests to cover registration fees. One contest is in partnership with the County of San Luis Obispo Public Libraries, and another supports individuals experiencing or recovering from a serious illness.

“Offering these scholarships helps to open doors for talented individuals who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend,” said conference director Meagan Friberg. “Our goal is to nurture fresh perspectives, foster inclusivity, and ensure the brightest ideas are heard, no matter someone’s financial background. This year, we are especially honored to extend support to those who are battling or recovering from illness while recognizing the strength, resilience, and insight they bring to our community.”

    Scholarships and contests

The Anna Unkovich, Paul Alan Fahey, and Linna Thomas Memorial Scholarships will support writers battling or recovering from illness. Applicants must submit a story or poem of 800 words or less using the prompt “It’s Time.” Six scholarships will be awarded based on need and the writer’s voice. The deadline is Sept. 10.

The scholarships honor Unkovich, a longtime volunteer coordinator for the conference; Fahey, the conference’s first LGBTQ+ instructor and a published author and mentor; and Thomas, co-founder of Coalesce Book Store in Morro Bay and a supporter of authors and readers.

The County of San Luis Obispo Public Libraries is also hosting a contest for free registration. Adults 18 and older may enter by submitting an essay or poem of 800 words or less inspired by the theme “It’s Time.” The deadline is Sept. 5. Entries may be submitted in person at library branches or online here.

“SLO County Libraries is excited to partner with CCWC to offer this opportunity to win free registration for the 2025 conference,” said Monique Matta, adult services coordinating librarian. “It’s our library mission to promote literacy and that includes encouraging our talented local authors. We will judge the entries on writing skills and compelling storytelling. There are 13 scholarships available, so it’s definitely worth your while to enter.”

    Teen program

The teen program, “Dream It, Draw It, Draft It,” will take place Sept. 26 from 3-6 p.m. It will include storytelling, illustration, outdoor inspiration and writing time. Participants will be mentored by Laurie Woodward, an author, screenwriter, teacher and peace consultant, with guest illustrator Stephanie Roth Sisson.

The cost is $75 and includes pizza and snacks. Students may return Sept. 27 for more than 30 workshops. Limited scholarships are available.

    Vendors and sponsors

Vendor booths remain available for book or writing clubs and writer-focused products or services at $200. Applications are due Sept. 5.

The conference is supported by Cuesta Community College and 2025 sponsors, including Kindle Direct Publishing, Rotary Passport Club of the Central Coast, Visit Morro Bay, SoCreate, SLO NightWriters, Chevron, Launch My Book and the Salamacha Family Trust.

Since 1984, the Cuesta College Central Coast Writers’ Conference has supported writers of all levels. Guided by community programs, an advisory board, and volunteers, it is one of the longest-running writers’ conferences in the country.
