– Pianist Paul Cornish will perform at Libretto in Paso Robles on Sept. 13 as part of a tour supporting his debut album, You’re Exaggerating! released on Blue Note Records.
The nine-song album of Cornish originals features bassist Joshua Crumbly and drummer Jonathan Pinson, with guitarist Jeff Parker making a guest appearance. Cornish discussed the project with Blue Note President Don Was on the label’s “First Look” video series.
Cornish has been recognized as part of Blue Note’s jazz piano tradition that includes Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Geri Allen, Jason Moran and Robert Glasper.
Glasper said, “Continuing the legendary lineage of Houston pianists while still carving out your own lane is not an easy feat. Paul is doing just that, giving us a few pages from his personal story. Understanding the history but not being held back by the history is the ongoing struggle of the modern jazz musician. But there is no history without the now.”
Cornish, who was born and raised in Houston and is now based in Los Angeles, studied at the Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts before launching a career that has included work with saxophonist Joshua Redman.
The tour includes performances in London, New York, Los Angeles, Paris and other cities. More details are available at www.paulcornishmusic.com.
