SabesWings fundraiser in Paso Robles supports cancer patients
Casino Royal theme honors Bret Saberhagen’s 1985 Royals season
– SabesWings, the charity organization founded by 1985 World Series Most Valuable Player Bret Saberhagen and his wife, Kandace Saberhagen, that provides financial support to cancer patients, will host its fifth annual “Strike Out” Medical Financial Toxicity event in Paso Robles on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5.
The weekend begins with a gala dinner at 5 p.m. Oct. 4 at Rava Wines and concludes with a celebrity golf tournament at 10 a.m. Oct. 5 at Hunter Ranch Golf Course. Tickets are available to the public at www.sabeswings.org.
The event raises money to support cancer patients with medical and household expenses. Organizers say the fundraiser generates hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.
This year’s theme is Casino Royal in honor of the 40th anniversary of Saberhagen’s 1985 World Series MVP season with the Kansas City Royals. Professional athletes from that season are expected to attend. Guests will be able to play casino table games during the cocktail hour for prizes, and organizers encourage upscale casino attire.
The gala will feature wine tastings, a seated dinner, silent and live auctions, and live music. A discussion led by Bret Saberhagen will feature athletes including Mike Timlin, Chili Davis, Sean Berry, Buddy Biancalana, Tom Gordon, Marcus Allen, Tim Brown, and Mark Rypien. Jonathan Coachman will return for the fourth year as emcee.
Other guests expected include chef Aaron May, chef Roshni Gurnan, supermodel Kim Alexis, former NFL quarterback Jim McMahon, sports analyst Mike Golic, musician Colt Ford, pitcher Scott Erickson, singer Michael Tyler, songwriter Patrick Davis, songwriter Lauren Jenkins, songwriter Channing Wilson, songwriter Tim Nichols, bassist Tully Kennedy, and Super Bowl MVP Mark Rypien.
The event will also honor individuals who have contributed to the fight against cancer.
SabesWings lists its celebrity advisory board as Colt Ford, Tully Kennedy, Chili Davis, Ted Lilly, Sean Berry, Mark Rypien, Dennis Harrah and Mike Eruzione.
