Special election scheduled for Nov. 4 in California

    – The San Luis Obispo County Elections Office will mark National Voter Registration Day on Sept. 16, encouraging eligible residents to register or update their voter status ahead of the statewide special election.

The day of action takes place 49 days before California’s Nov. 4 statewide special election. The registration deadline is Oct. 20. After that date, voters who need to register must do so in person at the Elections Office or at a polling place.

Since its creation in 2012, National Voter Registration Day has registered more than 6 million Americans. In California, voters must re-register if they change their name, address, or political party affiliation.

Registration can be completed online in minutes at registertovote.ca.gov. Voters can check their registration status at myvoterstatus.sos.ca.gov.

“The registration deadline for the upcoming special election is October 20,” said Clerk-Recorder Elaina Cano. “After that, anyone who needs to register must do it in person at the Elections Office or a polling place. So National Voter Registration Day falls at a great time and reminds SLO County voters that it’s a smart move to take care of it now.”

The Elections Office also provides resources to support nonpartisan voter registration drives or events.

“We’d love it if every eligible SLO County resident registered to vote and then turned out in each election,” Cano said. “Our office does not worry about how you vote but rather that you vote.”

Ballots and voter information guides for the Nov. 4 election will be mailed to all registered voters by Oct. 6. More information is available at slovote.com/november2025.

The San Luis Obispo County Elections Office is located at 1055 Monterey St., Suite D120, San Luis Obispo. For assistance, call (805) 781-5080 or visit slovote.com.
