Obituary of Stephen Robertson Yerger

– Stephen Robertson Yerger, a true horseman with a heart as big as Texas, passed away peacefully at age 68 at his cherished PAL&CC horse breeding property in Paso Robles. Born in San Antonio, Stephen never lost his fondness for all things Texas. He was a cowboy to the core, aspiring to live with a sense of adventure, deep kindness, and genuine warmth.
Stephen’s eyes always had a sparkle, and his laughter was unmistakable, full and contagious, the kind that lifted spirits and drew people near. He was big-hearted, generous, and the kind of friend and brother everyone hopes for.
His passion for the horseman’s life ran deep. Stephen devoted his heart to raising and caring for beautiful, prize-winning Quarter Horses at PAL&CC, alongside the wise and talented, Quentin Hall, a prize-winning rodeo competitor. Stephen loved nothing more than watching young colts and fillies grow, sharing his knowledge, and celebrating each new arrival.
He collected and restored horse-drawn wagons and buggies, and built the business, SRY Coaches. Stephen’s adventures took him across the country with his friend Tommy Harris and Harris Stage Lines, traveling to parades in Texas, the Rose Parade, the Bohemian Grove, rodeos, horse shows, and all sorts of private parties and gatherings. His beautiful teams of horses and his extensive carriage collection never failed to delight crowds and fellow enthusiasts.
Along with horses, dogs were one of Stephen’s greatest joys. With his best friend Lola Washburn, he traveled throughout the United States and Canada showing his beloved champions, Dallas and Holly. His faithful dog Louie was always by his side, a constant companion through life’s journeys and a source of comfort and delight.
Prior to his horse businesses, Stephen was part of the Cuesta College community for over 20 years. Rising to the role of Maintenance Supervisor, he was respected for his dedication and known for the same warmth and humor he brought to every part of his life.
Stephen is survived by his sisters, Camy and Joyce, and their families, including husbands, children, and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or From The Heart Animal Sanctuary honoring Stephen’s lifelong devotion to animals.
Those who knew Stephen will remember his big heart, his laughter, and the way he made every place feel like home. Stephen Yerger will be deeply missed, but his spirit and joy will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
