Landlord says impersonator claimed water was unsafe to drink

    – The City of San Luis Obispo is urging residents to remain vigilant after a report of an individual impersonating city water staff in the Madonna Road area.

On Thursday evening, Sept. 25, around 8 p.m., a landlord reported that someone had approached their tenant’s door and falsely claimed to be a city water employee. The impersonator told the residents that the water was unsafe to drink.

City staff confirmed there was no work being conducted in that area and that the water is safe for drinking and all other uses. Officials said there are no water quality issues in the city.

City employees carry official identification, wear city uniforms, and drive city-marked vehicles. Residents are advised not to provide access to their homes if they are unsure about the identity of someone claiming to be a city employee. Incidents can be reported to the San Luis Obispo Police Department’s non-emergency line at (805) 781-7312.

“The City takes the safety of our community seriously,” said Utilities Director Aaron Floyd. “We want to reassure residents that their water is safe and encourage everyone to stay alert and report any suspicious activity.”

The city is continuing to gather information about the incident. Anyone with additional details is encouraged to contact the Police Department at (805) 781-7312.
