Ribbon-cutting to open new public safety center in Templeton

Center includes a 140-foot communications tower, advanced dispatch technology, and expanded capacity for future growth

    – The County of San Luis Obispo will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 27 to officially open its new Public Safety Communications Center, located in Templeton. The facility is jointly operated by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office and the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department.

The new two-story, 20,193-square-foot facility replaces two outdated and overcrowded dispatch centers to improve coordination and communication among emergency services across the region.

The center includes a 140-foot communications tower, advanced dispatch technology, and expanded capacity for future growth. Construction involved more than 140 tons of steel, 150,000 feet of network cabling, 315,000 feet of electrical wiring, and 2,000 cubic yards of concrete. The site also includes new paving, concrete walkways, and 75 parking stalls.

The $39,922,358 project was developed through a design-build process managed by the County Public Works Department, with participation from IBI Group as architect, Diani Building Corp. as design-builder, T & S Structural, Above Grade Engineering, 3C Engineering, Mid-Coast Geotechnical, and Oasis Associates. The Sheriff’s Office, County Fire Department, County IT, Office of Emergency Services, and Administration also collaborated on the project.

“This new communications center represents the next generation of public safety for San Luis Obispo County,” said Fire Chief John Owens. “By bringing our fire and law enforcement dispatchers together under one roof, we’re improving how quickly and effectively we can respond when our community needs us most.”

The facility is now fully operational, and the first official transmission will be broadcast at the conclusion of the ceremony.

The ribbon-cutting event will take place Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. at 352 N. Main Street in Templeton.
