San Luis Obispo Tigers top the Greyhounds in Halloween matchup

Tigers improve to 6-4 after road win in Atascadero

    – The Atascadero High School Greyhound football team lost Friday’s home game to the San Luis Obispo Tigers, 28-14.

Halloween cast its shadow on the final game of the regular season. A lighter turnout than usual left many orange seats vacant on Senior Night. The band dressed in Halloween costumes, and a few costumed attendees entered the stadium on the rare night when Friday Night Lights coincided with Halloween.

Penalties dominated play throughout the game.

The Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 lead with rushing touchdowns by each of the Garrison brothers, Colbin, and his younger brother, Grady.

The Greyhounds reached the Tigers’ 4-yard line after a long run by Damon Mitchell, but a defensive stand by the Tigers stopped the drive. In the second quarter, the Greyhounds battled back behind strong running by Mitchell and a keeper by quarterback Mike Trejo.

At halftime, the score was tied 14-14. In the second half, the referees called more penalties than one generally sees in an entire high school game, especially this late in the season.

Tiger running back Colbin Garrison dominated the Greyhound defense. Late in the fourth quarter, the Tigers ran a Wildcat offense with Garrison to run down the clock. Quarterback Zion Hegg came in to take a knee to end the game just short of another Tiger touchdown.

After the game, Greyhound players and cheerleaders gave a final salute to the loyal fans who remained. The Greyhounds ended the regular season 5-5 overall and 2-2 in conference. The Tigers finished 6-4 and 3-1.

Playoff berths will be announced in the next few days.
