K9 teams demonstrate skills for Lewis Flamson students

Multiple agencies joined for Red Ribbon Week drug prevention event

    – Students at Lewis Flamson Junior High observed K9 demonstrations from multiple law enforcement agencies during Red Ribbon Week, an annual national campaign focused on drug prevention and awareness.

The demonstrations featured tracking and detection exercises as well as a bite-suit presentation, showing the skills and training of the K9 units and their handlers. The event was hosted in partnership with the Paso Robles Police Department, Atascadero Police Department, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, and Atascadero State Hospital Police.

“Events like these make drug awareness and prevention real and memorable,” said Lewis Flamson Principal Brandon Duncan. “They help our students see that our local officers are not just enforcing the law—they’re part of our community, working to protect and support them.”

Paso Robles Police Department School Resource Officer Joe Stanley emceed the demonstrations, which featured K9 teams including Officer Hernandez and K9 Pomic, Officer Goudy and K9 Maverick, Officer Morrison and K9 Balam, Officer Marchell and K9 Shadow, Deputy Leon and K9 Blesk, Deputy Moita and K9 Rocky, and Officer Lugo and K9 Griff.

Corporal Yeaman-Sanchez of the Atascadero Police Department participated as the decoy during the bite-suit demonstration, earning applause from students.

The event emphasized safety, awareness, and community engagement while connecting students with local officers through interactive education.

Paso Robles Joint Unified School District serves more than 6,400 students across northern San Luis Obispo County and is guided by core values of integrity, accountability, collaboration, innovation, compassion, and belonging.
