Hospice SLO County announces move to new location

Organization says new location improves visibility and long-term stability

    – Hospice of San Luis Obispo County announced that escrow has closed on its new home at 1305 Marsh St. in San Luis Obispo, one block from its longtime location on Pacific St.

The new, smaller facility will continue to be known as the Dorothy D. Rupe Center. The name honors the Arthur N. Rupe Foundation and the legacy that helped establish the organization’s first permanent home in 2001. Hospice of San Luis Obispo County said the move reflects a step toward sustainability by providing a more visible and efficient space while maintaining its existing environment.

“For almost five decades, Hospice SLO County has been a place of comfort, dignity, and connection for our community,” said Shannon McOuat, Executive Director of Hospice SLO County. “This move allows us to strengthen our foundation for the future—ensuring that we can continue offering free hospice and grief support services to residents of San Luis Obispo County for decades to come.”

Hospice of San Luis Obispo County is one of 14 non-medical, volunteer hospices in the United States. The organization offers free services supported entirely by community donations and volunteers. Its programs include in-home support for those facing life-limiting and end-of-life illness, caregiver respite, grief counseling, support groups, and community education.

The move to the new center will reduce operating costs, support long-term financial stability, and improve accessibility for clients, volunteers, and community partners. The organization said it remains financially stable and that the decision represents planning for the future.

“The new Dorothy D. Rupe Center honors our past while ensuring a sustainable path forward,” said Abe Lincoln, Board Chair of Hospice SLO County. “This is not just a change of address—it’s a reaffirmation of our mission and our deep commitment to serving this community.”

The organization expects to complete its move in early 2026, and services will continue without interruption during the transition.
