Main Street Association honors legacy of Norma Moye

    – The Paso Robles Downtown Main Street Association released a statement mourning the passing of longtime Executive Director Norma Moye, who died Dec. 15:

The Paso Robles Downtown Main Street Association announces with profound sadness the passing of Executive Director Norma Moye on Monday, December 15th.

Norma passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, at the age of 92. A fourth-generation Paso Robles resident, Norma dedicated her life to preserving and revitalizing the city’s historic downtown. She was a founding member of the Paso Robles Downtown Main Street Association, established in 1988, and served as Executive Director from 1992 until her passing. Under her leadership, the association achieved national accreditation from Main Street America, recognizing its excellence in preservation-based economic development and community revitalization.

Norma’s impact on downtown Paso Robles is immeasurable. She created signature events that became beloved community traditions, bringing generations together and drawing visitors from across the region. Most notably, she founded the Vine Street Victorian Showcase in the 1980s to celebrate the neighborhood’s historic Victorian homes with music, carolers, festive lights, and holiday cheer. This year’s 39th Annual Showcase, held December 13, drew thousands of attendees, a fitting tribute to Norma’s enduring vision and love for our community.

In addition to the Vine Street Showcase, Norma founded and nurtured other events that defined the city’s calendar, including the downtown tree lighting at City Park, Olive and Lavender Festivals, and numerous gatherings that promoted civic pride and unity. She often credited volunteers with the success of these initiatives, saying, “I have the world’s most precious, valuable volunteers in the whole world, and that’s what accomplished all this stuff.” Her energy, determination, and generosity left an indelible mark on Paso Robles.

Norma’s resilience shone during challenging times. Following the 2003 San Simeon earthquake, which caused over $250 million in damage, she played a pivotal role in rallying the community to rebuild, brick by brick. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she continued to lead the association with unwavering optimism, supporting local businesses and volunteers through uncertainty. Norma’s encouragement and leadership inspired confidence and unity, embodying the spirit of her hometown.

Her dedication and achievements earned widespread recognition. In 2013, she was named Pioneer Day Queen. In 2018, the Hispanic Business Association honored her as Citizen of the Year, and she received additional accolades from the County of San Luis Obispo and the California State Assembly. In 2022, local artist Dale Evers dedicated a custom archway in her honor, renaming the alley home to the Main Street office “Norma’s Way.”

“Norma Moye was truly the matriarch of Paso Robles,” said Board President Jeffry Wiesinger. “Her life of public service touched every corner of our community. She built a downtown from the ground up that is now a thriving center for shopping, dining, entertainment, and celebration. People will remember Norma’s name and her contributions for generations, as the heart and soul of what makes Paso Robles special.”

The Paso Robles Downtown Main Street Association extends deepest condolences to Norma’s family. While her presence will be profoundly missed, her legacy lives on in the vibrant downtown she nurtured and the countless lives she touched. The association remains committed to carrying forward her vision, ensuring that downtown Paso Robles continues to thrive as a place of connection, culture, and celebration.
