San Miguel Fire Department receives $12,600 traffic safety grant

Funding will be used to acquire extrication stabilization equipment and hazard advanced alerting systems

    – The San Miguel CSD Fire Department announced it has received a $12,600 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to purchase new emergency response equipment.

The funding will be used to acquire extrication stabilization equipment and hazard advanced alerting systems, known as the Rescue 42 Junior and hazard alerting systems. First responders use the equipment to rescue crash victims trapped inside vehicles, while the alerting systems notify drivers using navigation systems of the presence of emergency vehicles along their routes.

“We are incredibly grateful for this grant, which will allow us to purchase state-of-the-art rescue tools and technology in addition to providing training to first responders which is critical for the care of people injured in crashes,” San Miguel Fire Chief Scott Young said. “These tools and technology will significantly impact our ability to protect and serve our community, allowing us to respond more effectively in times of crisis and prevent traffic collisions.”

The hazard alerting system provides advanced notification intended to reduce traffic collisions and increase safety for first responders and drivers. Post-crash care plays a key role in preventing serious injuries from becoming fatal, and delays in providing care can affect survival chances. Federal data show that 42% of people killed in car crashes were alive when first responders arrived.

The Rescue 42 Junior equipment will assist first responders in delivering lifesaving measures to patients trapped in vehicles, while the alerting technology is intended to reduce the risk of injury to firefighters, other first responders, and drivers.

Funding for the program was provided through the California Office of Traffic Safety by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
