Obituary of Nancy Wimmer Hostetter, 89

    Oct. 12, 1936 – Nov. 22, 2025

    – Nancy Wimmer Hostetter passed away peacefully on November 22, 2025, at Mission View Health Center in San Luis Obispo, with her daughter by her side. She was 89 years old.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Nancy was the daughter of Eldon and Gladys Wimmer. She grew up in Highland Park alongside her older brother, Robert. After graduating from high school in 1954, she earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a teaching credential from Michigan State University in 1958. Shortly thereafter, she moved with her family to Southern California, where she began her lifelong career in elementary education.

Drawn by the opportunity to teach abroad, Nancy joined the Department of Defense Education Activity and was assigned to Bad Kreuznach, Germany, where she taught the children of U.S. military personnel. She embraced this unique experience, traveling throughout Europe and immersing herself in the culture. Nancy especially loved teaching guitar to children after school and playing music at evening sing-alongs with service members and their spouses—gatherings that at times included Kris Kristofferson and his wife.

It was in Bad Kreuznach that Nancy met the love of her life, Daniel Hostetter, who was serving with the 8th MI Detachment. Their courtship was brief but deeply meaningful, and they soon became engaged.

After returning to the United States, Nancy and Dan were married in a small ceremony at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In 1966, they moved to Southern California and settled in Rowland Heights, where Nancy resumed her teaching career.

In 1977, Nancy and Dan relocated to Paso Robles, California, where they raised their family in the Dresser Ranch area. Nancy spent several years as a substitute teacher before joining Trinity Lutheran School on Creston Road, where she taught elementary grades for a decade. She later continued her passion for teaching with the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District, working many years at Winifred Pifer Elementary School. Although she formally retired in 2000, Nancy continued working with the school district through 2015. She cherished staying connected with her students over the years and took great pride in knowing she had helped shape so many young lives.

Nancy is survived by her husband of 60 years, Daniel Hostetter; her son, Eric Hostetter, and his wife, Kristin, of Jackson, California; and her daughter, Heidi Hostetter Wicka, and her husband, Karl, of Paso Robles. She is also lovingly remembered by her two grandsons, Kurtis and Clayton Wicka.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Obie Atkinson, Dr. Scott Greeves, and Dr. Justin Davis for their compassionate care, as well as to the staff and administration at Mission View Health Center in San Luis Obispo for their kindness and support during Nancy’s final months. There is no service planned, at this time. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donation be sent to the Arthritis Foundation.
