Friday night crash in Paso Robles sends driver to hospital

Off-duty sheriff’s deputy stopped to assist at the scene

    – A two-vehicle crash blocked South River and Niblick roads for about 30 minutes Friday night.

The crash was reported around 7:48 p.m. at the intersection, where a Kia SUV collided with a compact sedan that was turning left. One passerby told officers it appeared the driver of the SUV was attempting to beat a red light.

The driver of the SUV was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. About five people, including two young children, were inside the sedan. No injuries were reported among the sedan’s occupants, though the younger children were visibly upset following the collision.

An off-duty sheriff’s deputy, who had just picked up his daughter from Paso Robles High School, was driving behind the sedan and stopped to assist. The deputy checked on the occupants of both vehicles and helped escort those in the sedan out of the car after it stalled in the intersection. He remained on scene and managed traffic until Paso Robles Police officers arrived. The driver of the SUV stayed inside her vehicle until first responders arrived.

Within about 10 minutes, three Paso Robles police officers, a fire truck, and an ambulance responded to the scene. A tow truck and a flatbed truck removed both vehicles from the intersection. Crews cleared debris, and the roadway reopened within about 30 minutes.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Got lucky this time. Red light runners are a pandemic in this town. Most drivers know you don’t jump out into the intersection when the light goes green, you wait a second or so. There are ought to be warning signs at all intersections to alert drivers to these people. Look before you leap.

There ought to be police at these intersections citing people who run the red lights. Instead they’re busy pulling people over for expired registration so they can collect their $200 vehicle release fee.
