Local grad makes all-star cheerleading team
Jessica Bartlett
Jessica Bartlett, 17, of Paso Robles was recently selected to join the three-time world champion Cali All-Stars SMOED cheer team. She is the daughter of Tom and Alicia Bartlett of Paso Robles.
All four years of Bartlett’s high school career were spent maintaining an above 4.0 grade point average, and keeping her focus on her cheer career. She was recently accepted to the University of California Berkeley, but before starting college Jessica will be heading to Ventura to spend more time in practice, perfecting her sport.
“It is a super intense work out,” Bartlett says. “People tend to think of cheer as what they see at a football game. What I am doing is a combination of acrobatics, tumbling, and dance formed together into one routine.”
What does it take to be on Cali SMOED? It takes a lot of hard work, dedication and true passion for the sport paired with the talent to do these high level skills.
Bartlett’s supportive mother, Alicia Bartlett, a Paso Robles Realtor, gave a brief summery on what their family dynamic is and how her daughter has continually proven her self: “We support her financially and emotionally because she is so passionate about her sport. We are extremely proud of her. Her academic accomplishments, ambition and athletic ability simply amaze us.”
The cheerleader’s long-time coach Amber Davis is very proud her. “My little Jessica, that I’ve coached for 7 years, since she was 8 years old, has been asked to be on 3 time World Championship Team, Cali All-stars SMOED!, Davis posted on Facebook. “I am so proud of her! She has never quit, never given up and always been dedicated! Thank you Jess for representing Paso Robles and Shockwaves! And thanks to the coaches along the way who trained her with me, Laura Brian, Cali Rose White, Charlotte Covington, Desmond Nicole Henderson.”
SMOED, which means small-coed team, has a phenomenal reputation in the cheer community. Here are the accolades the Cali SMOED claim: More than 400 National Titles, Grand Champions, Choreography awards, USASF Worlds 2009-2013, World Champions, IALC Champions 2010-1014, NCA national Champions, along with three silver medals at the 2008 Cheerleading Worlds.

Jessica is so deserving!! She is very talented and such a hard worker!! So happy to see her achieve this success!! I have enjoyed watching her do her stunts (even though I held my breath each time!!) and fabulous cheering at PRHS. That girl flies through the air defying laws of physics with such grace and beauty!!
