Atascadero Police remind riders about motorcycle laws
– The Atascadero Police Department issued a notice reminding parents and riders about state requirements for operating electric motorcycles on public roadways.
Police said many electric motorcycles are intended for off-highway use only and must be registered with the California Department of Motor Vehicles as off-highway vehicles unless they are properly equipped and registered for street use.
Before riding on a public roadway, riders should ensure they have a valid driver’s license with a Class M1 endorsement, wear a Department of Transportation-approved helmet, and confirm the motorcycle is properly registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles. A license plate must be displayed correctly, and the motorcycle must have required safety equipment, including brake lights, headlights, and turn signals. Riders must also carry valid liability insurance.
The department also reminded parents and guardians that if a child under 18 operates a motorcycle or electric bicycle without a valid license, the parent or guardian may be cited under California Vehicle Code 14607 for knowingly permitting an unlicensed minor to drive on a highway.
“If you can confidently answer ‘yes’ to all the above — have fun, ride safe, and enjoy the road… because you’re legal!” the department said.
