San Luis Obispo County Airport launches indoor navigation system

Smartphone navigation system guides travelers through the airport terminal

    – San Luis Obispo County Airport announced the launch of GoodMaps, an indoor navigation platform designed to improve accessibility and assist passengers navigating the terminal.

GoodMaps provides turn-by-turn navigation throughout the airport terminal using smartphone-based technology. The system delivers guidance without requiring additional physical infrastructure, such as beacons or hardware installations.

The platform provides audio guidance for blind and low-vision passengers, visual directions for deaf and hard-of-hearing travelers, step-free routing for wheelchair users and those traveling with strollers, and navigation options designed to reduce sensory overload for neurodiverse individuals. Passengers can also explore the terminal layout in advance using the platform before arriving at the airport.

“Accessibility is an essential part of the travel experience,” said Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg. “By introducing GoodMaps, we’re ensuring that every passenger has the tools to navigate the terminal with greater independence and confidence.”

Courtney Johnson, director of airports, said the technology also aligns with the airport’s sustainability goals.

“GoodMaps enhances accessibility while supporting our commitment to thoughtful, forward-looking innovation,” said Johnson. “Because the system operates without additional hardware or energy-intensive infrastructure, it aligns with our sustainability goals while improving the overall passenger experience.”

The launch of GoodMaps complements other sustainability initiatives at San Luis Obispo County Airport, including a 940-kilowatt solar photovoltaic canopy system in Parking Lot 4 and additional decarbonization efforts.

San Luis Obispo County Airport serves as a transportation gateway for California’s Central Coast, offering domestic flights that connect passengers to major cities across the United States. The airport serves areas including Southern Monterey County, San Luis Obispo County, and Northern Santa Barbara County.

The county also operates Oceano Airport, a general aviation airport serving the Central Coast. Located near the Pacific Ocean, the airport supports flight training, recreational aviation, first responders, and community events.
