West Paso Robles earns city’s first Firewise USA designation
Firewise USA status may unlock insurance discounts for residents
– Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services, in partnership with the West Paso Robles Firewise Board, has announced that West Paso Robles has been approved as a Firewise USA community, marking the first such designation within the city.
The boundaries of the West Paso Robles Firewise community include all city properties located west of Vine Street, from 1st Street to 24th Street.
Firewise USA is a national program administered by the National Fire Protection Association that recognizes communities actively working to reduce wildfire risk. Participation helps communities organize around wildfire preparedness while strengthening partnerships between residents and fire agencies.
In California, the state’s “Safer from Wildfires” regulations require insurance companies to recognize Firewise USA-designated communities and provide potential insurance discounts to property owners located within those communities. The association processes Firewise USA applications and provides approved community boundary data to insurance industry data providers twice annually, in March and October, ensuring insurers have updated information on communities in good standing.
Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services extended appreciation to the Paso Robles Community Emergency Response Team for their assistance in preparing the Firewise application. The department also recognized Firewise Board members Dan Jones, Steve Eorio, Jill Corgill, Rick Goree, John Hamon, and Gina Grieb for their leadership in advancing the program.
The Firewise designation represents a milestone in strengthening wildfire preparedness and promoting home hardening efforts within the city, particularly in the west side wildland-urban interface area.
