Paso Robles scouts complete winter trips, plan busy spring

December trip brought 38 scouts and parents to Yosemite

    – Scouting America Troops 60 and 1602 in Paso Robles have completed several camping trips, a conservation project, volunteer opportunities, and a fall popcorn fundraiser during the 2025-2026 year.

Both troops meet weekly during the school year at the Scout Hut, located at 2247 Oak Street. Troop 60, open to boys in grades 5 through 12, meets Monday nights from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Troop 1602, open to girls in grades 5 through 12, meets Tuesday nights from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. During meetings, Scouts work on rank advancements, learn life skills, play games, and plan upcoming service projects and trips.

This past fall and winter, the Scouts visited caverns in the Sierras, backpacked through the Santa Lucia Mountains, hiked Yosemite, and camped in the Carrizo Plains and Shaver Lake. In December, 38 Scouts and parents traveled to Yosemite to hike Upper Yosemite Falls, Mirror Lake, and the Valley Floor. The troops also participated in the annual Klondike Derby at Camp Chawanakee following a storm that brought four feet of snow, competing with homemade sleds in various challenges, including a high-speed race to protect a raw egg while being pelted by snowballs.

Looking ahead, the troops have a backpacking trip and a Santa Cruz Boardwalk trip planned for March, the Fort Cuesta Camporee at Santa Margarita Lake in April, and white-water rafting on the Kern River in May. In June, the troops will attend summer camp at Camp Fiesta Island on Mission Bay in San Diego, where activities will include motorboating, paddleboarding, sailing, and more.

To fund activities and maintain the Scout Hut and equipment, the troops hold ongoing and annual fundraisers. One ongoing fundraiser is a CRV Recycling Program; business owners, schools, and event hosts can contact info@prtroop60.com for more information. An upcoming annual fundraiser is a Tri-Tip BBQ in May, with Scouts selling tickets for the event.

Those interested in joining may attend any weekly meeting at the Scout Hut. For questions, contact info@prtroop60.com or prtroop1602@gmail.com.
