Letter: Tax dollars should be investing in our future, not fueling a war

    letter to the editor

    To the editor,

    – As a resident of Templeton, I am deeply alarmed by the Pentagon’s recent request for $200 billion to fund the ongoing conflict with Iran. This “Operation Epic Fury” was never formally authorized by Congress, yet we are being asked to foot a bill that is, quite frankly, insane.

With our national debt at a staggering $39 trillion, we cannot afford to treat the federal budget like a blank check for “forever wars.” While hundreds of billions are funneled into munitions and overseas strikes, families right here in San Luis Obispo County are grappling with a rising cost of living and stretched local resources.

I appreciate that Representative Salud Carbajal has raised concerns about reining in military powers, but we need more than words. We need our representatives to stand firm and vote “No” on this supplemental funding. It is time to prioritize the security and stability of our own communities over an open-ended regional conflict with no clear exit strategy.

Our tax dollars should be investing in our future, not fueling another avoidable war.

    Y. Whisenand, Templeton

Are you sure that preventing a strong possibility of a nuclear attack by Iran isn’t investing in our future? Should we take the risk of a nuclear explosion? And how does changing what we spend money on save us money? You might check out what happened in the 1930s by taking the same risk – about 60 million people died.

    Jason Grey

Really! Maybe I was dreaming, but I swear I heard someone say that Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been completely and totally obliterated last summer.
Then again, maybe the nuclear scientists and engineers in Iran were much, much smarter than anyone could possible be and were able to bring their totally obliterated program back to life in only 8 months.

Thank you for highlighting the risk.

100% agree with this letter. Our tax dollars could and should be better spent.
But, America finds itself it this weird place where telling lies are the currency of the realm. We have a legislative branch that is basically spineless and a president that somehow convinced enough voters to believe he would be the answer to all of their wants and needs – and has proceeded to fail miserably on every promise and commitment. Yet, he and his ‘family’ and rich friends are getting much, much richer every day.
I am not going to say the Democrats are the answer, because they are not, and they also have the ability to lie to our faces with a straight-face. Our system of government has been corrupted by money, money, and more money. Lobbyists need to be eliminated, term limits for representatives and senators should be required, and others changes are needed. A government for the people and by the people is fading fast.

    Christopher Payne

Amen. This unnecessary war of aggression must be vigorously opposed.
