Learn to make sauerkraut at the Paso Robles City Library

    – The Paso Robles City Library will host a sauerkraut-making class in partnership with the UC Cooperative Extension Master Food Preservers of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties on Saturday, April 11.

Participants may sign up for either a morning session from 10 to 11 a.m. or an afternoon session from noon to 1 p.m. at the library’s Study Center at 3600 Oak St.

Class size is limited. All supplies, ingredients, and recipes will be provided. No canning experience is required. Participants may want to bring an apron or wear old clothes in case of spills.

The class is part of the library’s Cuesta Book of the Year series. This year’s featured book is “Sacrament” by Susan Straight, which tells the story of nurses and healthcare during the pandemic.

According to the library, sauerkraut is a fermented cabbage packed with probiotics, fiber, and vitamins C, K, and U, and offers health benefits including improved digestion, immune system support, and reduced inflammation. Its probiotic content promotes a healthy gut microbiome, which is linked to better mental health, weight management, and a potentially reduced risk of chronic diseases including Alzheimer’s and cancer.

    Registration is open now.
