Paso Robles police recover $10,000 in scam case
Officers respond to welfare check request tied to app activity
– The Paso Robles Police Department responded on Wednesday to a report of suspicious circumstances at a residence in Paso Robles.
A citizen reported suspicious activity on the Uber app and requested a welfare check at the residence.
Officers responded to the home and learned the resident had been scammed for a loss of more than $10,000. After learning the circumstances, officers worked to identify a third-party Uber driver and contacted the driver by telephone. The funds were returned to the Paso Robles Police Department and then returned to the victim.
Police determined the Uber driver had no knowledge of and was not involved in the scam. Officers said the investigation is ongoing as they work to identify potential suspects.
The Paso Robles Police Department reminded the public that there are various types of scams and that debt collectors or government organizations will not send a courier to a home to collect funds to settle a debt. Police also said nontraditional payment methods, including gift cards or cash, should not be used through a third party as payment.
Anyone with information regarding this case or similar cases should contact the Paso Robles Police Department at (805) 237-6464 for non-emergencies or contact their local law enforcement agency.
