Kristin Smart case investigators recovered ‘several evidentiary items’ during recent search

    Detectives excavate Arroyo Grande property

    – The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release Tuesday that investigators recovered several evidentiary items during a recent search and excavation at the Arroyo Grande property of Susan Flores connected to the disappearance and murder of Kristin Smart.

Investigators did not recover any human remains during the excavation, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The search took place at a property in the 500 block of East Branch Street in Arroyo Grande under a search warrant signed by a Superior Court judge.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, detectives used investigative techniques including ground-penetrating radar and soil vapor science during the investigation. Soil scientists identified an area along the side yard of the property that produced results consistent with the possible presence of human remains.

On May 8, investigators secured an additional search warrant to excavate the area. Large concrete pavers along the side yard were removed so excavation work could begin.

Excavation activities continued May 9, with investigators sifting through excavated soil for evidence related to Smart.

The Sheriff’s Office said the items recovered during the search are being analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation.

“The Sheriff’s Office remains fully committed to finding Kristin and bringing her home to her family,” the Sheriff’s Office said in the release.

The Sheriff’s Office said no further information is available and that it will not provide additional comments or updates regarding the investigation.
